KY eats - Buka Puasa dinner at Saloma Bistro

Following the first puasa trial last week, I decided to do it again since there was this free buffet dinner sponsored by a particular company. The buka puasa (break fast, no, not breakfast) place is at Saloma Theater Restaurant at Ampang, near KLCC, and right next to Zouk.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
very nice, high class setting

We arrived there about 6:45pm and there were already hundreds of people there. There was a stage, with some local boyband trying to entertain the crowd best as they can with their dry throats. My colleague Moorthy and I were the two non-muslims in our group, and I spotted maybe a handful of other potential non-muslims. We were definately the minority representing perhaps 2% of the crowd, but were treated the same like everyone else. Well, I did puasa for the day too though, had my instant noodle at 5 am.

The buffet line is huge, the offering includes chicken, lamb, beef, fish, prawns, various malay kuih, ice kacang, otak-otak, satey, rice, briyani rice, teh ice, soya milk, syrup ice, and more. As suggested by delia, I started out with dates and cold soya milk.. well, since they didn't have those wholesome ones that came out of the cow's multiple breasts. I then proceeded with fried chicken wings, cucuk udang (fried shrimp cake), rice with beef rendang, raw vegetable, crab, eggplant, okra, and some raw vege with sambal.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
my stomach was very very full...

Since they practically serve all Malay food imaginable, gluttony was unescapable. We ended up sitting there to rest for another hour after the meal just so we can manage to move our limbs in a coordinated way that resembles the bipedal walk. The food was good, but somehow a little bit more salt or soya sauce would make it just perfect.

Jack0 puasa on monday, and Bryan said he was doing it too. Best.

P/S: Please invite me to your Hari Raya open house. hehe.

KY eats - Takoyaki, Octopus Balls at SS15

Takoyaki, or Octopus Balls, but not Octopus' Balls, is a Japanese delicacy made with chopped octopus, cabbage, green onion and pickled ginger all wrapped a flour and egg shell. There are also some Japanese named ingredients that I had no clue. You can find a sample of recepi here, though it'll be hard to cook it at home since you'll need the mold.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
Topped with mayonese, yummm

Asia Cafe at SS15, Subang Jaya, just happened to have a stall serving Takoyaki. They come in a package of 6 balls for RM 4.00, a pretty reasonable price. Please do not eat it straight away when they're served cos usually they are very hot and will easily burn your mouth (just ask ST.) The taste is pretty rich and quite greesy but managable. Overall, with the mayonese topping, it's pretty good for finger food, or when you just want to cram that extra 8000 calories in your system. You're all skinny, right?

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
Huey Fang says it's teh delicious

Similiar stuff is served in 1U Jusco at ground level. It is slightly more expensive but comes in extra varities, such as the Unagi balls. I have yet to try it there.

KY game - UNO exercise

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
UNO, the game you have most likely played when you just about knew how to stop peeing in your pants, is a fun and exciting card game. It was a slow weekend, and since we don't wish to gamble for money nor to force each other drink alcohol (that would be FA's choice). We put in a very healthy reward and punishment system for the noobs.

It goes like this:
Image hosted by Photobucket.com
Isn't this a healthy game?

I did about 40 push ups, horny did a couple dozens too. Carol was the real athlete, she did over 40 sit ups, a couple dozen squat and stands, and probably around 10 floor hugging push ups. Huey Fang and Chan got away without having to do anything tho.. those lazy noobs. hehe.

We used to play the Chinese card game Big Two (chor tai tee) that way too. But if the game ended and you have 13 cards on hand.. it's a painful 39 push ups... Try it, and get healthy!

KY cam - Public Sleeping

Taking public transport can be exciting and amusing at times. Just look at the pictures of public sleeping that I have managed to take! Cheers!

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
How lovely.

Now I must confess that I have slept in the LRT on numerous occasions, and I have missed my intended station more than once. I would put a picture of myself sleeping on LRT just to be fair, but then again I don't trust my phone with a stranger especially when I'd be sound asleep.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
Public sleeping not confined to young folks only!

I am convinced that our LRTs have some anesthetic treatment to it's air conditioning system that makes us all go zzzz.. If you are an insomniac, please give it a try. Too bad the service is only from 6am to 12am, they don't operate when we need sleep the most.. sigh.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
Repeat offender caught!

I wonder if the STAR lrt line and the KTM are just as nice to sleep in.

KY eats - Kepong Crab, 30 varieties

So Horny was supposed to bring his colleagues for a crab feast, and we were asked to join along. His colleagues somehow fakeplanned him, but since we were already all worked up in anticipation, we went for De Foodland crab place at Kepong anyway, just horny, sotong, FA, and I. Suanie was too sleepy, and ST was busy fixing his hdd.. boy did those noobs missed out.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
Kerol eating her ebiko from cold storage, siao. FA is hungry

We were starving after fighting through the slow ass moving cars on LDP. We ordered sweet and sour crab, steamed crab with chinese wine, vege with foo yu, tofu with fakeplan abalone (mushroom), rice, and also a roll for dipping that sweet and sour sauce. Kerol brought along her ebiko to look sophisticated.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
How's your appetite?

The tofu was very smooth and the fake abalone mushroom was especially well textured. The crabs, they were excellent. Big fat claws and they are well crushed too, this is the first time that I did not need a nut cracker, a hammer, or my yet to developed wisdom tooth to crack the shell. The sweet and sour crab was a bit messy to eat, but the taste was very rich. Dipping the bun in the sauce, and it was like OMFGodly good. Too bad we were too hungry and gorged down a plate of rice prior to the crab arriving, otherwise we would have ordered more rolls.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
That's how you peel a claw, noob!

The steamed crab with chinese wine was something I had for the first time. It was a pretty different taste, I don't usually associate herbs with crab, but the combination was rather delicious. FA couldn't stop drinking the soup base, she said it was sweet and tastey. We think it was because of the alcohol. The fried vege was very good too, by the way.

The shop serves crab in 30 different ways. They are: Marmite, Cantonese Style Steamed, Lighty Soya Sauce, Special Taste, Black Pepper, Hot & Spicey, Sweet & Sour, Kam Heong, Black Stout, Kong Pao, Curry, Pepper Salt, Stir Fried, Cheese, Fragrant Flower, Pan Fried, Creamy Mushroom, Fermented Black Bean, Creamy Butter, Mee Hoon Fried Crab, Nyonya, Crispy Butter, Ginger & Spring Onion, Steam with Chinese Wine, Vietnamese Style, Claypot Creamy, Claypot Drunken, Steamed with Yellow Wine, Claypot Yellow Wine, and finally, Salted Egg Yolk.

They also have about 10 items on the menu that you have to order 3 days in advance. Those stuff are probably rather pricey. Our dinner costs RM 160 for 4, not exactly cheap, but the food was definately good, and the service was fast. It was a weekday afterall.

KY Puasa - and still alive.

I had promised my colleague some weeks ago that I will try to puasa (fasting) for at least a day, just to get a feel of what it is like. So yesterday I did just that, and since you can read this entry, it's a living proof that I am survived it.

The hardest part of the whole ordeal was waking up for Sahur (pre-fasting breakfast). I crawled out of bed at around 4:30am in the morning, drove all the way from PJ to Ampang in a hurry. Fasting time starts at around 5:40am, I reached Ampang at 5am to allow ample time for a nice heavy breakfast.

Try having a full plate of rice with fried chicken and curry at that hour, it was not easy to gorge all of that in. I drank a glass of teh ais and another glass of warm water for good measure.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
Sahur time (5am), and 4pm, dancing stomach.

So, not a single drop of water or an food in my system, from 5:30 am onwards. It wasn't really all that bad. The morning was fine, you do get thirsty about 3-4 hours after the meal, but it's not any more than after exercise, and it didn't really get progressively worse as the day went by. As for hunger, my stomach had a rock concert going on at around 3-4pm, but sort of got used to it thereafter.

My colleague called at 7pm to wish me Selamat Buka Puasa, I told her I was buying boxed noodle at pasar malam, with pork. hee-hee. It was an interesting experience, to paraphrase one of my friends: "you feel more in control of your body after you do that." I might do it again next Monday, anyone wants to join?

KY eats - Woo Ga Chon Korean BBQ - Hayanna's

So we found out that hot chick blogger Hayanna (suanie said so) posted an entry on this korean BBQ place her mom recently opened. Being possessed by the hungry ghost soul, we went to check out Woo Ga Chon Korean BBQ restaurant at Ampang last weekend.

Half a dozen of us went there, rojaks, v0ices, fox, paul, horng, and myself. The place is not terribly easy to find, and thanks to rojak's excellent lead, we had to make several u-turns en route. Kinda made us look abit funny. But lets get to the juice, the food.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
Combination of Real Charcoal + Propane, Efficient

The deal is like this, you choose the types of meat you want for BBQ, and there'll be a host of other companion dishes that follows, and those are bottomless. In a way, it's a buffet that you never need to stand up, good for lazy buggers like most of you here. I mean, when you have to go to a regular buffet line for the 5th time, you do get a bit annoyed.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
Don't tell me you're not drooling, noob.

We ordered beef, marinated beef, and "uh hwa jou" pork. The pork is actually kinda bacon, but in thicker slices, and fresh, not marinated or smoked. The staff did the BBQing for us, they usually make it to about medium rare before cutting it into bite size. If you want yours well done, just leave it on the pit for a few more minutes, it's that easy.

The owner (Hayanna's mom) showed us the proper way of dining Korean BBQ, get a piece of meat, dip in the sauce/seasoning, put in the leave + vege, add garlic if you like, put another type of sauce, wrap, eat, pwnage! It was really mouth watering.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
Look at those boys enjoying, too bad Hayanna wasn't there

The side dishes were too numerous to name, there were fried tong fun with chicken and mushroom (paul practically drank that,) few types of fried vege, miso soup with coagulated pork blood (best,) pickles, kimchi (of course,) and more. They were very good, and as soon as we finish a plate, the staff would be trying to shove 2 new plates in. You just simply can't keep track of how much you have eaten.

The bill came and it was RM160 for 6 of us, or slightly less than RM 27 per pax. For this type of food, boy, it was well worth it. Highly recommended! Dont' let the deco fools you, the food is way, way better than the setting, which is somewhat simple and plain. But why do you want to pay more for interior designing of a restaurant anyway unless you want to impress some high maintenance chicks.

So rojaks don't have to get you to do a few u-turns to get there

Here's the address, and of course, a highly professional map for your navigational needs.

But yet another anonymous source warned that this girl has a curfew, a mama's girl, a modern day Cinderalla. Probably a good thing, you know she's not contaminated by KL's night scene... yet.

KY eats - Cheap and Good Malay Food near KLCC

Following the entry on Cheap and Good Chinese Food near KLCC, as promised, here's the installation for the Malay variety. So for our Muslim brothers, there's cheap lunch available at the golden triangle, too. However, please wait till after this fasting month, hehe.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
bet you didn't know this kinda places exist just a stone's throw away from KLCC

This Malay "food court" is referred to simply as the BSN food place. It is a collection of Malay hawkers located at the parking lot that is right across KLCC tower 1, and in front of the BSN building. There are over half a dozen stalls there selling everything from Mee Soto to Nasi Kandar, and Roti Canai to Sotong Kangkung.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
best or not?

One of my favorites is the Ikan Bakar (bbq fish.) A piece of what you see in the picture only costs RM 3.00. That's mighty economical, don't you think? Other than sting ray, there serve another two types of fish, and they always come with two different sauce for your just-in-time seasoning. A salty and sourish lime based sauce with diced onion and chilli padi, and a soya sauce based sauce, and again, with diced onion and chilli padi. However, they varied in taste.

This meal, with the generous sized water melon juice and rice with some ulam (fresh raw vegetable) and curry gravy costs me a grand total of only RM 6.00, that's counting the fish. At the KLCC food court, you can probably get a plate of plain noodle and some ice water for the same price, and it'll probably suck too.

The particular stall that I got this serving is the 1st of the second stretch of stalls. I heard that the place is serving pretty good buka puasa dinner this month.

KY - BBQ with the noobs

We got a free BBQ set with the purchase of Petronas Syntium engine oil just last week. After coming back from the market, we thought: hey, why not a barbeque? It was just a random idea and contrary to my neighbour's assumption, it wasn't anyone's birthday.

So we marinated some chicken with garlic, onion, ginger, and salt, a fish with curry paste, sliced beef, some sausages, tomatos, and for appertizer while waiting for the grilled food, we fried some roasted pork with garlic and thick soya sauce. Of course, there were some alcohol involved..

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
The grilled tomato was delicioussss

As this was totally unplanned and we didn't have that much food in stock, we didn't really invite anyone other than the two famous people who happen to stay a stone's throw away (your stone may vary.) So suanie joined us for the cook-out, while FA arrived later, for some alcoholic treatment.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
Yeah, kerol was drunk

It was a great evening, the atmosphere was perfect, with the sound of running water from the pond, the music, the breeze from the fan, pretty good BBQ food, friends, and of course, a bit of booze. You should get yourself a BBQ set.

KY eats - Kedah Asam Laksa at Alisan, SS4, PJ

How many times has it occured in your mind that you so want to go to Penang just so you get to devour the asam laksa there? Well, if you're a laksa lover living not too far from PJ, you have salvation. According to kerol and suanie, this shit is teh good. (I'm not a huge laksa fan, and prefer real dinner like bak kut teh, heehee)

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
suan and kerol look so happy!

The stall is situated at this eating place called Alisan, basically a mamak + kopitiam type of setting, with numerous hawker stalls offering fried lala, yong tau foo, wan tan mee, and of course, the laksa. According to kerol, this laksa is of the Kedah style, which is slightly less soupy than the Penang type, but otherwise pretty much the same.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
This plate shouldn't be hard to clean..

The asam laksa is served in a plate rather than a bowl, and comes with generous portion of chillie padi on the side. In the plate there are your standard laksa noodle, shrimp sauce, fish based soup, chopped vege, cucumber, and some other stuff that I cannot name. It's delicious, that is why these 2 girls finished it clean even after just having a heavy dinner less than 2 hours prior. I didn't eat, I was still full. hehe

A thing to note though, this laksa stall is like the superstar of the hawker stalls at this area. It had been on some chinese newspapers twice since I moved there. As a result, it is always pretty busy and they ask that you self-serve. Other than laksa, they have pretty good Jawa Mee, Chai Kuih, and some Chinese dessert soup/drink. The laksa is RM 3.50 if I remember correctly.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
Call me when you go there, I am only 5 mins away on foot.

P/S: Peter Tan is having a charity drive and he's SHAVING HIS HEAD FOR HOSPICE, please do lend your support, thanks thanks thanks.

KY eats - Cheap and Good Chinese Food near KLCC

Now many of us have been bitching about how much food in KLCC costs, a plate of mixed rice can set you back at RM 10, and a sugar cane drink goes for RM 2.50. However, if you are willing to walk across the street, there are cheap and frankly, better tasting food just around the corner.

Enter Sweet Home Restaurant at Wisma Sentral. I would actually call this place a kopitiam instead. The shop is on the ground floor facing the parking lot, directly opposite Isetan side entrace. If you walk from KLCC, it is less than 2 minutes under the sun.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
Nice little kopitiam

Other than mixed rice, the shop also serve to order, like any "tai chow" place. The price is very reasonable, usually a single entry goes for only around RM 5.00 or so. We ordered vegetable (yau mak with fu yu), pork knuckle with vinegar, and herbal chicken. With 3.5 plates of rice and 2 chinese tea, it only costs Rm16.50. That's a very full lunch for 2 person, and cheaper than a burger king set lunch.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
leave no prisoner

Other dishes that are highly recommended are vegetable with roasted pork (choi tam siu yok,) fish with tofu and kang kung belacan. The portion of the dishes isn't very big, but it is economical, and perfect for lunch. Comparing with other similar places that I dined in, I would rate this above average taste wise, and top of the list budget wise.

Don't complain about the lack of affordable meal at KLCC. I'll show you some other cheap and good Malay food stalls nearby some other time.

KY eats - Ampang Yong Tau Foo

I am sure some of you noobs here have heard about Ampang Yong Tau Foo, and might have gone to some shady shops with the "Ampang Yong Tau Foo" signs. However, if you haven't gone to the original place, all you've had would just be akin to any stalls in KL claiming they serve "Penang Char Kuih Teow". Lets get old school, lets get the real stuff.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
argh, i'm starting to drool..

Now there are 3 shops right next to each other at this original Ampang Yong Tau Foo place that is situated in an old school area with all the pre-war buildings. I have tried each of the 3 shops and thus far think that all of them are pretty much equally good. So these days we just go to the one that we manage to find a parking space.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
we ordered quite a feast for 3 people

Last weekend we visited the middle shop, called Restaurant Orchard View Yong Tau Foo. Each piece of yong tau foo is RM 0.60, and they serve a variety of other dishes too. We ordered "mui choi khau yok" (fatty pork with some fermented vege,) glass chicken legs (boneless chicken feet, served with carrots, chillie, parsley, lime,) peanut soup, oily vegetable, and 20 pieces of mouth watering yong tau foo. Terence was there, that explains why we ordered so much.

Some purists will say that the place should sell nothing but yong tau foo, and I think one of the other shops is like that, but I think it doesn't hurt to have a little variety. The yong tau foo is fresh and have a pretty nice texture to it. They come in chilly, okra (lady's finger), bitter guord, tofu, foo chok, and gyoya if you just ask them to mix it up. Of course, you can order seperately.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
Here's the map, foo!

If you love yong tau foo, this is the place to go. Any of the 3 restaurants will do justice to the Ampang Yong Tau Foo name. I never walk out of that place with an unsatisfied stomach. There was once I had to down 18.5 pieces of yong tau foo cos we mistakenly brought a Malay friend there and found out it wasn't halal after ordering 30 pieces for 3 person. The other chump only had 11.5, wtf.

KY eats - noodle in a box, SS2 night market

Night market (Pasar Malam) at SS2 runs every monday night. There are several type of fancy food sold there that you don't usually find at local food courts or restaurants. One of them would be the noodle in a box, more appropriately, a plastic container, or in Cantonese, "hap chai min".

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
Looks good, no?

This dish is sold by 2 young chaps, and they usually set up their stall nearby the Magnum 4D shop. It's usually quite busy and frankly it's hard to miss the stall since the set up is quite unique.

The noodle is similar to those you have in wan tan mee, but of finer variety. You can choose from the 3 ingredients: BBQ pork, pork in sauce, and chicken leg + mushroom. Noodle with single ingredient is sold for RM3.80, combination of any two for Rm 4.00, and all three for RM 4.50. Obviously I ordered with all, it was a no brainer. hehe

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
Slurps.. the little plastic container is going to be empty in a few minutes

Other than the main ingredients described above. The standard stuff are green onion, fried shallot, mushroom, fungus, green chilli, and of course, the noodle. A thick soup/sauce that tastes pretty creamy is poured over to give you that rich taste.

The dish tastes pretty good, almost like a cross of ordinary chicken leg and mushroom wan tan mee and beef noodle (though this is pork.) I especially like the fact that it is served in the plastic container, makes it easier to eat it at the nearby misai mamak stall. They even give you chopsticks.

Try it, I think you'll be delighted.

Here we go again, boys and girls, another pimping entry. Ladies and Gentlemen, please welcome Anne. You know the drills, look back at entries on FA, Xaviera, and Vanessa for info. So, lets get it on!

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
Introduction:
Name: Pocket Anne
Age: Legal, can apply for her own passport
Weight: feather weight
Height: she doesn't want to talk about it
Occupation: Oil and Gas Exec
Speciality: Acting like a high school girl
X factor: Travelling with her is economical, she fits in your check-in luggage. Flexibility!

Synopsis:
This is the cute little girl next door, but don't let the high school look alike image fools you. This girl can dance like a snake, play pool like a pro, and sing the "shanghai beach" song like you've never heard it before. You'll be surprised. And oh, she has one of the most femenine way of walking.

This girl also enjoys fine food, from Japanese sushi, to Kepong bak kut teh. Bring her to play some pool after dinner, or catch a movie, play bowling.. er.. maybe we should scratch the bowling option unless you can find the 8 lb ball.

If she isn't cute, I don't know who is

To date her:
No, you don't have to be taller than 5'3. So, lets bid! I guess this is where I bring in Peter Tan, he'll specify a charity for the money to go to if I ever recieve any.

KY's birthday - Thanks Guys

So it was my birthday on Saturday. I'm not telling you how young I still am, just old enough to drink and young enough to still be single. It was a blast, and here's how the whole fakeplan thingy the noobs did for me.

11am - Terence fetched me for lunch, with Sai Meng. He gave some stupid reasons that he wanted to spend me dinner but was going to be busy at night, so, lunch. I believed that bugger. We went for some yong tau foo at Ampang, it was the good. At this time Kerol was pretending to sleep and skipped the lunch... it was all fake.

2pm - We reached my place after lunch, I opened my room door and wtf.. whole room filled with post-it notes, everything was labeled! On my bed itself there were more than a dozen notes... mirror, lamp, books, photos, speakers, laptop, every single bottle of liquor.. The noobs (ST, Kim, FA, Erna, Kerol, Chan, Huey Fang) were all there.

3-6pm - We went to Chillies at Bangsar Shopping Complex, had some beer, food, and OMGWTFBBQ Suanie got me a birthday cake, it was cholate with banana inside, was cold, was cool, was good. Suanie & Matakecik joined us at this point.

Dinner time - Had seafood at Telugong, Klang. A few more joined us, including Sheryl, Zess and his gf. There were about 13 of us if I remember correctly. Margie & Faggot weren't able too join us, but thanks for the bottle of French Merlot dude!!

It was a great day, not looking forward to the next one tho. After the 21st, you just don't really look forward to the subsequent birthdays..

THANKS GUYS! I had a great time, and really appreciate it. I also want to express my gratitudes to everyone who called, sms, left friendster msg, YM msg, MSN msg, and IRC wishes. hehe.
