KY party - Halo Cafe at Sunway Pyramid

Not a big fan of smokey clubs with overly loud music that will make your ears end up like this? We decided to have a couple drinks and chill out over the weekend and went to Halo cafe at Sunway Pyramid instead.

can you spot the silhouette of FA? and the dumb pattern fox arranged on the table

Some of you banana (English educated Chinese) noobs might not have realised that there exists two big franchise of semi open air pubs with live performers singing mainly chinese songs. Rice cafe is prominent in Penang, while Halo Cafe is pretty established here in the Klang Valley.

The place serves some finger food as well as a few entries that can fill your stomach should your date be late by 2 hours and you miss your dinner altogether. In terms of drinks, they have coffee, tea, beer, mixed cocktails, and even whole bottle of whiskeys and wine to choose from, all reasonably priced. For example, a margarita is RM 17.50 and jasmine tea at RM 10 or so.

The live performance was excellent, there were 3 male singers for the night, with one of them playing the guitar. One of the singer sang Hikara Udata's "First Love" that was totally out of this world. FYI, the current Malaysian Idol used to sing at Rice cafe in Penang.

It's a pretty nice place to hang out, enjoy live music that isn't too loud for you to still be able to chat with your friends. Probably a great place for a date too, now any hot chick want to go there with me?

KY eats - Best Rawang Steamed Tilapia, Sister Lan's

With horny's awesome driving skill, we somehow arrived at Sungai Buloh, when we had initially wanted to go to Puchong Kepong for bak kut teh. Since we were already pretty much half way to Rawang, we decided to go the extra mile to sample the famous Steamed Tilapia fish at 'Sister Lan' (Lan Cheh in Cantonese) road side restaurant.

check out my pro way of eating a fish!

The fish was really good, it was the best tilapia I've ever had. They steam it with alot of diced garlic, very finely shredded ginger, and some chopped chili padi. The sauce is a very light blend of soya with some other sauce. All these is topped with some parsley and sliced spring onion.

now look at suan's noob way of annihilating her lunch

The ingredients, especially the strong aroma of ginger, garlic, and parsley, were especially effective in doing away the undesireable smell that is often associated with fresh water fish such as tilapia. The fish is steamed just right, properly cooked and yet not overly done, which left the meat still very tender. The sauce was just the right taste that I hardly have to reach for the soya saucer.

we had something else going together with the fish too

Other than the fish, we ordered 2 dishes of vege and a prawn entry to complete the meal. The salted prawn was excellent, fried baby kailan was passable, but do avoid the kangkung belacan as it was not even average.

Overall, this is definately a place worth visiting if you do not mind t he half hour drive from KL. The tilapia is a must-eat and the salted prawn was also one of the best I've had.

omg my mad skillz in map

I am guessing most of us aren't very familiar with Rawang, so here's a slightly in depth direction.
Business hour is 11am to 3pm for lunch, and 6 to 10:30pm for dinner, closed on Tuesday.

KY saw - 3 wheel waja

As noticed by horny and later myself, there was this waja with 3 wheels in the neighbourhood. Thinking it must be a new version of Proton much like the Chancellor 2.0 V6, I was eager to take a look at it. So the next morning when I go to work, here it was...

requires a really heavy driver to not tip the car

Lucky for the owner, a friendly neighbour decided put a warning notifying the fact that the car is crippled. The evil person who did this was obviously banking on an evil laugh if an when the owner tries to drive the car. However, if the owner is really heavy, the car might still work as usual afterall! (apply your own physics logic)

replaced with a nice little wheel, lighter, saves petrol

The waja had a prosthesis the next day. The lesson of the story: use at least one special lug nut for your wheel to prevent this prank on your car!

KY eats - Japanese Instant Noodle, Black Sauce Curry

So I ran out of idea on what to have for lunch one day while I was at Isetan, saw this aisle full of Japanese instant noodle and decided to grab one and give it a try. This particular cup of black sauce curry noodle costs me RM4.99, and comes with some real meat (limited amount)

Instruction for "cooking" this cup noodle is same like any other, pour in hot boiling water, and let sit for 3 minutes. Of course, you have to pour the ingredits from the 3 little packs into the cup first. However, don't ever say you can cook if you did this. Cooking is such a lost art, sighhhhh

simple to prepare, isn't it?

This cup noodle tasted better than the standard maggie variety, then again, it costs more than twice as much. I don't know what they meant by black curry, it tasted a little salty, not spicy at all, and the soup base is actually a little more to the thick side. There are little chunks of meat, but barely enough to feed a hamster. Overall it's not a bad meal, but you do tend to get hungry again in a couple hours time..

I think I might try some other types next time. They sell some that cost more than RM 10 per bowl.. advertised as having real big chunk of meat and all. At least the pictures suggest so, I can't read Japanese other than Kanji.

KY eats - Awesome Steamed Rice at Kelana Jaya

So we got hungry one of the Saturdays, and since we were around the Kelana Jaya Giant, we decided to try out some unexplored kopitiams around the area. Got to this one behind the furniture mall that is next to the small giant, and Sotong discovered the steamed rice stall that her friends were recommending to her all the time.

awesome stamed rice
new awesome feature: integrated map!

Horny ordered salted fish with fatty pork, and I had pork ribs with mushroom and a bowl of dried vege soup. True to the reputation and the handful of newspaper cuttings pimping the establishment that's plasted on the counter of the stall. The food was very good.

The rice is pretty well cooked, with flavor reaching to the bottom of the bowl and not just on the top. The meat is soft and the taste is just right, not overly salted nor too blunt. Easily one of the best steamed rice I've had, and better than the one in Wai Sek Kai at ss2 I used to frequent. The soup is nothing too special, pretty good, but then again I haven't tasted any dried vege soup that stands out in either direction.

If you are looking for a good and cheap lunch and happen to be going to Kelana Jaya near Giants, give it a try.

KY eats - BumbuBali Restaurant at Puchong

Some of you lucky noobs had the experience of holiday in Bali, for the rest of us, there is BumbuBali restaurant, giving a taste of Bali that is close to home and offering a peace of mind while dining.

nice menu with illustrations, good atmosphere too

The establishment is located in Puchong, at the shop lots opposite the Giant hypermarket of Bandar Puteri. Saturday night was very busy, we had to wait some ten minutes for the table even though we got there pretty late for dinner at close to 9pm. Obviously that was a good sign for a restaurant.

We ordered Nasi Campur BumbuBali (mixed rice), and Campur-campur tiga (3 mixes). We had initially wanted to order more, lucky the waiter adviced against it as the portions are rather large.

Nasi Campur BumbuBali is served with either potatoe rice (or yellow rice), with beef (or chicken, or lamb), squid, fish, prawn, and kangkung belacan (vege). It was more than a full meal and I reckon even Kim could not finish it.

are you feeling hungry?

Campur-campur tiga is supposedly an appertizer, but the portion can feed a suan. The three combinations is deep fried calamari, chicken wings, and satey on lemon grass stem. The satey was especially good and highly recommended by your culinary expert, me.

The food was great, something different and yet pretty close to local taste. It's a bonus if you are one of the ex-bali tourists who misses the Bintang beer, they sell it here! However, as a good boy and all, I had star fruit juice instead. Total cost of the meal was RM 66+, pretty reasonable for a taste of Bali without the terrorist threat.

this is how you get there, yo!

You can also SMS the restaurant, just send "BC Bumbubali P" for promotion, "BC Bumbubali RSV" for reservation, and "BC Bumbubali E" for enquiry to 36399. Rather innovative! Of course, you can always call 03-80618699

KY eats - Hokkaido fest at Isetan

So I went up to Isetan supermarket again to get myself some lunch to go. It was a big mistake, Hokkaido fest was in full swing, and being a Japanese food lover, it can only mean that my pocket is going to get terribly lighter.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
just look at them sushis and bentos!

There were all sorts of offerings from the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido, synonym to great Japanese seafood in the culinary vocabulary. The little area next to the 3rd floor escalator of Isetan were packed with quite a large selection of Sushi, Sashimi, dried fish, scallops, fried seafood, cakes, and even Doraemon's favoritte, dorayaki

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
bestest office lunch

Being a huge fan of both Ikura (salmon roe) and Hotate (raw scallop), I just couldn't help it when noticing the perfect combination on display. After the battle of taste buds vs financial sanity. The raw sense scored a stunning defeat over logical sense and I happily paid RM 39.90 for a take-away bento.

The stuff was very very good, scallop was sweet and juice, and there were 3 whole scallop in the serving. 2 of them raw, and the remaining is lightly cooked/marinated. The portion of ikura was generous and tasted like how ikura should be, slighlty salty, terribly oily, and absolutely juicy. The bento was easily one of the best I had from anywhere.

If my memory serves me correct, the fest runs until the end of the month and won't be back again until the next year. Tempations, tempations....

KY eats - Best Penang Roti Canai at Transfer Road

Everyone knows about Char Kuih Teow and Hokkien mee in Penang, but do you know that you can find one of the best road side roti canai place on the little island too? Hungry stomachs seeking something other than Chinese food in Penang rejoice, as a bonus, it's Halal mamak food, too.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
just look at the curry beef!

The stall is located at Transfer Road a stone's throw away from the Chulia Street junction, in the heart of Georgetown, Penang. The must-try item is not exactly the roti canai itself, but the curry beef that is the side order for the roti canai. The meat is absolutely tender and never over cooked, it tastes sweet and juicy. I had the beef with roti telur and a glass of teh ais for breakfast, and everything came to less than RM 4, if I remember correctly.

KY - New Mailbox from Terence

I have been without a working mailbox (house, not email) for the past 8 months or so. Or more accurately, since that fateful day that is the 20th of March during the Faggots Birthday Bash.

It went like this, Goh got terribly drunk. Someone suggested to him that the mailbox looked cute, he destroyed it with his King Kong power. End of story. Well, drunk people do all kinds of funny stuff, just look at Paul Tan dancing, FA puked silly, and kim being wasted for example.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
New Mailbox, Finally! Installation included too.

No more wet envolops, woohoo! It's a good thing too that Terence has since quit smoking, and reduced his drinking dramatically. One less problem for the Klang Valley.

KY party - Paul Can Dance!

Well we had a great time on friday night. Partied at Qbar (not Cuba) with a bunch of noobs including ST, Kim, FA, fox, Xaviera, Kerol, Terence, Paul, and a few other friends. The highlight of the night was, PAUL DANCED.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
Paul wasn't exactly sober.. and then he discovered we have the video

A picture speaks a thousand words, and a video, man, that's court room evidence. Now let me bring you the first exclusive video (thanks to fox) of Paul dancing silly in the club. It was all great, some energy was definately sourced from FA's fantastic moves (sorry no video for that) and the big dude got more exercise last night than the last 4 years combined.

Video link - Paul Tan Dancing Queen

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
more incriminating photos

Clockwise from top left: Screw Driver. ST, FA, and Xaviera. fox shaking his head, and finally Kim trying out her best model shot.

It was a great night, music was a bit tad loud. Ringing sensation (goddamn tinnitus perhaps) in the ears. A pair of ear plugs might help. Parking was only RM 2, can you even believe it? No KL traffic to contend with. And when you have these crowd, you're all set.

Join us next time ya!

KY eats - Dim Sum at Jalan Ipoh

While most of you might associate dim sum with breakfast, some of us who usually do not like to wake up in the morning still wants to enjoy this delicacy too. So if your stomach is hungry and your taste bud yearns for something other than mamak food, the Jalan Ipoh dim sum will be an excellent alternative.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
Galvin said it's the good.

There are actually two different dim sum restaurants seperated just a couple of shop houses between each other. It is said that the one on the left sells better char siew pau (roasted pork pau) while the one on the right might have slightly better tasting small dishes.

So we dined at the one on the left side as the lads wanted to have some char siew pau at midnight. Overall the dim sum was very good too, but the especially awesome dish was the porridge. It was very thick, but very smooth, with almost a whole piece of chicken breast in each bowl. Galvin swallowed 2 bowls of that.

Price wise the place is pretty reasonable. Came to about RM 30 or so for three. Another place you can find around the clock dim sum is Sri Petaling, next to the artificial pond with artificial hobby fishermen paying good money to fish in the man made pond for man fed fishes.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
I do not gurantee the accuracy of this map. hehe

KY meme - me me me me ... from cyber-red

So Reta tagged me in this meme thing, before blogging more about food or pimping, let me just do this instead. You might get to know me better after reading this, then again, you might not, but here goes:

10 years ago I was:
finishing high school, probably having the great SPM exams. Didn't know what I would be doing next.

5 years ago I was:
planning the trip from St. Cloud, Minnesota to Washington DC metro area, driving the old trusted 1987 Honda Accord. It was a journey of approximately 1,300 miles or roughly 2,100 km ONE WAY. Spent the Y2K new year there.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
it was teh far...

1 year ago I was:
trying to sort out this whole getting a house thing.. meeting with lawyers, bankers, and all that jazz. And we planned for the x'mas party that was coming.

Yesterday I was:
at this hour I think I was reading the last few chapters of Diaspora by Greg Egan. Either that or trying to convince a young lady to have dinner with me tonight.

5 snack I enjoy:
chocolates, nachos, dried guava, dried mango, dried plum. best.

5 songs I know all the words:
happy birthday, ais kacang song, this is my house (mandarin song, damn best), some dave matthews band and radiohead tunes, negaraku (maybe)

5 things I would do with a million splurges:
buy 5 russian brides.

5 bad habits:
making fun of people who chew their nails, yes all 5 of their nails on the right hand. As shown on this post "why you shouldn't bite your nails" by yours truely.

5 biggest joys:
friends, car, bike, pay day, and sitemeter telling me there are noobs reading me blog. woohoo

5 things I would never wear:
bras, tampon, sanitary pad, high heels, 1st generation hyundai coupe

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
it's the ugliest "sports" car ever. all 111hp of it. cis

5 favorite TV shows:
Don't really watch tv nowadays, but Simpson, Futurama, and some stuff on Discovery, TLC, History, National Geogrpahics, and NOVA used to get me glued on the tube like chewing gum on your pants.

5 fictional characters I would date:
I can think of at least one girl whom if without a boy friend I would date, but since that's not the case, she can qualify as a fictional character. But not nice to put the name laa.. Maybe I should put in the standard gwen stefani, liz hurley.. (insert hot female celebs here)

KY blog meets - Botak Peter Tan and more

Image hosted by Photobucket.comTo cap off the holiday season and the success of hair for hospice charity drive by Peter Tan, we had hosted a blog meet at my place. Some twenty people turned up and it was great fun.

Peter had dutifully shaved off his head a couple days ago instead of doing it at my place, I thought it would have been a lot more fun otherwise. With Paul's facial hair and his probably daily shaving practise, I'm sure he could have done a job on par with the barber that Peter consulted.

As per Peter's initial request that everyone should prepare enough food for 20, we ended up with more than we can possibly gobble up. There were pasta from Emily, 20 pieces of huge curry puff from Paul & fox, sausages from Reta, fried mee hun from FA, yong tau foo from Kenneth, drinks from a few other people, and more..

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
everyone like happy happy like that..

Some of us had the remaining food for dinner, and still there are leftovers. I just want to say "Told you so, Peter boy!"

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
some noob photos

Clockwise from top left: Kenneth and fox acting surprised, Jolene trying to gain some weight that she really needs, Andreas and Emily drinking and having curry puff, and suanie trying to measure her boobs in a strange way.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
more noob photos

Clockwise from top left: Reta taking a picture of me taking a picture of her.. heh, Emily, serge, and a smiling Reta, Albert standing in the middle and Chea Yee at the far right, and suanie with horny seems to be having a ball.

We ate, talked, ate, watched 2 DVDs (the longest yerd, and euro trip), ate, ate, ate.. social social abit. It was a nice meet up and I hope everyone had fun. To the noobs who over slept, had to work, or stays too far away, it's your lost. hehe

The noobs that came includes (in no particular order):
Might have not known your blog link or spell your name correctly, do let me know.
See you again!

KY - Blogger's meet with Botak Peter Tan

If you have read Peter's blog here, you would have known already. We are having pot luck at yours truely's residence. All are welcome, and hot chicks especially so. The details as follow:

The place:
8, Lorong SS3/59B, PJ. It is behind the Taman Bahagia LRT station, a couple of minutes' walk. Look at the map lah.

The potluck:
Peter asked each of you to bring enough food for 20, he's just being ridiculous. Imagine if 20 people brought enough food for 20, each. We'll end up with food for 400. Even suanie might not be able to finish all of those by herself! So, do bring food but not overly excessive, finger food are especially welcomed.

The highlight:
You get to see Peter botak, I hope we can shave him there instead of him doing it at a barber or some dodgy place.

The date/time:
6th November, 2005. 2pm, late comers are to be fed to the fish.

The direction:
Look ma, nice map by KY!

KY eats - Okonomiyaki, Japanese Pancake/Pizza

So i stumbled upon this little restaurant at Low Yat plaza offering Okonomiyaki. Now I had no idea wtf it is, but the pictures sure looks good, my stomach was conducting a concert and I'm not puasa, so we decided to have a meal there.

Okonomiyaki is a Japanese pancake kinda stuff, with various ingredients in it. Main stuffing seems to be noodle, onions, and vege, then you get all the other good stuff such as prawn, beef, pork, squid, salmon, and more. Read more at wikipedia's okonomiyaki entry.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
they cook it right in front of you

We ordered the "Supreme set" that is good enough for 2 hungry stomachs, the stuffing were prawn, bacon, and squid. The set meal is divided into 2 parts, one okonomiyaki, and another udon omlete kinda stuff. The udon omlete is served like "nasi pataya" style, egg wrapped around udon with some bacon in it, topped with some okinomiyaki sauce that tastes pretty much like oyster sauce. A plate of kimchi came with it too, don't ask me why.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
these stuff looks great, don't you agree? drooling yet?

The taste of okonomiyaki is pretty decent, tho not the greatest of things I have eaten. If you are a noodle lover, you will for sure love this thing. The taste may come across a little blunt too, but there's nothing some extra okonomiyaki sauce won't help. Give it a try and decide for yourself if you think it's good. There are several choices to choose from, like salmon, pork, and even cheese. The price was less than RM 40 for two, pretty reasonable.
